Plants and Animals

Our Plants and Animals unit is well on its way!  We kick started our unit with a nature walk in the school garden.  We quietly observed and looked high and low for signs of life.  Kids enjoyed searching for birds, discovering growing veggies, and turning over rocks to find insects and other critters.  It got them thinking about relationships between plants and animals.  Then, we brought some gardening into the classroom!

We dissected a lima seed to find that each seed begins with a tiny plant surrounded by food.  We just need water to wake it up!

We then planted alfalfa and rye seed into cups so we can observe how plants grow.

We are learning that plants are very important to other forms of life on our planet.  To see the interaction of plants and animals, we are creating mini-habitats in terrariums.  Soon, we will have some critters to observe!

We will also be studying different types of animals.  Currently, students are becoming very familiar with penguins.  They are so excited to learn new facts about these flightless birds.  As we progress in our Plants and Animals unit, students will be able to compare and contrast what they learned about penguins with other animals.
