Mapping Unit

Students have been working on a mapping unit. The learning goals of this unit are to..

1. Locate on maps and globes their local community, California, the United States, the seven continents, and the four oceans.
2. Compare the information that can be derived from a three-dimensional model to the information that can be derived from a picture of the same location.
3. Construct a simple map, using cardinal directions and map symbols.

To help achieve goals two and three, students constructed a three-dimensional model of an imaginary town, which they named "Sinkerville." Each student was assigned an address and a house in the town. They then constructed a simple map of the town, using cardinal directions and symbols. We then addressed letters to friends, using the Sinkerville address. Finally, they wrote out directions from the post office to their friend's address for the mailman to follow.
