We recently finished our Folktale unit in which we read folktales from various parts of the globe. Our objectives in this unit were to...
- Classify folktales by studying the genre. Know that most folktales are retold over many years, feature animals, and have a moral or a lesson.
- Practice retelling.
- Identify the characters, setting, problem, and solution of a story.
- Increase awareness of other countries and cultures.
- Determine the main idea/moral/lesson/author's message.
Most of the books we read for this unit are featured on Shelfari. We will continue to explore the genre of folktales throughout the year, especially in the spring when we look at more modern stories from Arnold Lobel and Leo Lionni and discover how they are similar to folktales.
